California - Fan Palms
Although the fan palms now growing at
Cottonwood Springs may not have been here
during the time of Cahuilla occupancy, the
Indians regularly used fan palm fruit as food.
In times of famine pith from the trunk was used
as emergency food. Fibers from the fronds
were woven together and made into sandals.
The fronds themselves served as thatching for
Cahuilla huts.
