About Trona Pinnacles

The Trona Pinnacles rise from the floor of Searles Valley, a chain of over 500 stone monoliths, reaching as high as 140 feet tall. Formed by geothermal activity in a past age when Searles Lake was hundreds of feet deep, calcium carbonate bubbled up through vents in the lake bed, and solidified in the cold lake water. They are spread out over a fourteen square mile area.

In 1968 the U.S. Department of the Interior designated the pinnacles as a National Natural Landmark. A rough dirt road accesses them from California Highway 178. A labyrinth of roads and paths meander between the stone spires providing hours of exploration.

The alien landscape has been used as a setting for a number of movies.
